People didn’t use the word blog, but if you were on the Internet pre-1996, you know the concept existed. A blog is really just a frequently updated personal webpage. As for social media, section 230 was a reaction to public forums and chat rooms, so we know without even looking that those must have predated its existence. No, there wasn’t Facebook in 1996 (query whether the world was a better place), but technological developments much more than legal ones explain the Internet we see today.

No, it’s because I mostly only get troll comments on my blog, so without 230 I’d shut down user comments completely rather than accept potential liability for those comments.

Speaking of troll comments, I’d be grateful if you provided factual support for your claim that there were blogs and social media before Section 230.

Is that because you’d have nothing to talk about and this blog wouldn’t exist? It certainly isn’t because Disqus would go away. There were blogs, fora, chat rooms, and social media before Section 230, there are blogs, fora, chat rooms, and social media in jurisdictions where 230 doesn’t exist today, and there will be blogs, fora, chat rooms, and social media once regulations catch up to the fact that the Internet is no longer really sui generis when it comes to the law.

Sorry if I’m stating the obvious, but I’m sure you realize that if we “moved on” from 230, you wouldn’t have had the opportunity to post this comment to my blog at all…right?
