The Copy[rite] Act of 1790 was written in order to prevent wealthy settlers from reprinting their imported elementary spellers from Britain.

The rational for this regime was to censor presses who would reprint the Kings Best English Spellers.. The Copy[rite] Act of 1790 and the entire Copy[rite] regime left today is for select censorship of speech. The United States misspelled copy[rite] as [sic] “copyright” but never recognized the need to protect honor or dignity by retracting speech. http://human-dignity-US.org
