Hands off is not an open/shut case. Bailing out failing companies or throwing tax paying money at solar panel companies that it's obvious they will fail is a good reason to back off. Now stopping mergers is a good reason to enforce fairness so you won't have companies gobbled up till there is some rich fat cat owning them all. Oops too late! Disney is owned by ABC,Owned by a bank.etc

Teddy was especially using the Sherman Act and even got Morgan JP in heaps of trouble and wouldn't back down when he tried to plead, bribe and threaten the President. None of that worked. We can do it too we just don't. We have what's called Anti Trust laws that broke up several companies but since AT&T we stopped doing it for some odd reason. When Microsoft was sued they were sued for stupid reasons by people who don't know what is actually going on. Did they sue them for bricking old PC's with bad updates on purpose? NO! Did they sue them for over pricing Windows? No. Did they sue them because Microsoft made their own software titles and Windows Media Player? ABSOLUTELY!

That was a garbage lawsuit that just basically led everyone in circles. There was nothing wrong with Microsoft making their own software titles as that would mean it would work best on Windows.

Otherwise we need to stop being hypocrites and sue Apple for their closed app store.

There are sadly many people who don't even know what it means to own physical software or movies anymore being able to watch offline whenever they want without spying. We still have our movie collections from the Bush era still working when DVD's were new and just bought a DVD/Blue Ray Player that can go on Youtube if we want.
Sad thing is I couldn't do the posts like this or several other users on here that are paragraphs long on a tiny phone so therefore most people will ignore these kinds of site. I certainly couldn't read them having to use my thumb to scroll.

They do 3 things on phones the most. Driving directions, shopping and social for the news and cat videos or sadly porn. Kids who don't know any better will throw money away at micro transactions until they reach an older age and feel stupid about it.

Since I don't look at porn that may be why I don't get any nasty viruses or if I do get the viruses Web Root is able to easily take care of them since I stay away from those bad sites. I pirate old and I mean OLD games but that's it. You can get NGLID wrapper that will make NGlid software work on Windows 64 bit to make really old 95 era 3D titles work. It also puts in the old Direct 7,8 stuff faking it to make it work though you may need CPU grabber if it runs too fast.

I haven't had to fix a computer since 2011 and that was a memory leak only due to old RAM failing not any nasty websites. I just got a new PC this year so I can do stuff faster. Mom now has my old PC which a Windows 10 update destroyed it. We erased it and put Linux Mint on it which it's now working again like when I bought it in 2008. Generally motherboards start pooping out after 5 years of continuous use Maybe 7 if your lucky so it's weird the motherboard hasn't fried yet.

In fact as a result of the push to phones I have noticed including this site you can't copy and paste anymore. I've seen it since summer time as I try to cite sources the best I can unless it's from my personal memory or taught stuff where a lot of people aren't aware of.

Now we will just have people typing or bashing on smartphone keyboards (Is that what it's called on phones?) from their behind.

The real problem is the last 10 years the soft now hard push to phones only so the CEO's see that as biblical truth so why bother to compete when nobody will see you?

I don't mind there being phones as they are a handy tool for portable communication but it's wrong to make them replace a computer.
Phones at best are consumer devices not creation devices: at worst they will be used (and already are) to control what you see or hear which right now the left are foaming in the mouth they are losing so are censoring anything they don't want you to hear.

Being limited to the APP you have no real choice or give up surfing the web unless you like me still own a PC but on the PC side it's ugly ass to browse the modern phone UI web. All that endless scrolling is based on touch pads which means wearing your hand out and it's harder to type now as it's slowed down for phones meaning you will miss a lot of key strokes. If you are used to typing 40 to 50WPM phones you can only do half that speed so the search engines and discussion portals assume you will type less so slow the response time down. No matter how good you are you cannot overcome that limitation.

With a PC I have a real keyboard and don't need to use minutes or pay 100$s of dollars monthly for various services not including the phone contract which is also expensive. PC's you just pay once and it will now last you a good five to eight years especially if you have Webroot.

A lot of folks who have never even seen a computer don't understand the true cost of a smartphone. They are cheaper upfront but a lot of hidden costs which limits what you do and who wants to watch a movie on a 6 inch screen with crappy speakers?

It's a Spanish law- not an EU law. Seriously, you dont understand this?! Think of the EU as the USA and Spain as say NY or any other state. As long as one operates in the EU or USA then the EU Commission/DOJ/FTC can legislate for/regulate them. Of course, if they cease to operate in NY, then NY can no longer regulate them, but the USA could, because they still operate in other states (assuming they operate in other states). I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt that you missed that its a Spanish law because otherwise... Also, from an antitrust POV, you dont need to be physically located in a market, you need to sell your services/goods in the market. Same as the US. If you physically execute an anti-competitive agreement in Africa say, but you sell goods (affected by that agreement) in the US, the FTC/DOJ could come after you- irrespective of whether you have a physical footprint in the US. The jurisprudence is a little less clear in the EU, though I'd be pretty confident the EU would be find a way to go after such companies. They have in the past. If Google operates in the EU, the Commission will have jurisdiction over it. A physical footprint is not necessarily determinative. Do you really not understand this?

Google announced today they will stop their Spanish news aggregation services so they don't need to comply with the new pay-for-redistribution.

This is *exactly* what I predicted could happen as corporations seek to remove themselves from the unfriendly regulatory domains.

I'm sure Google's lawyers confirming my prediction speaks volumes about whether or not my understanding is flawed. Fortunately this discussion isn't about me or my comprehension skills, and in the future if you think I'm wrong please explain how and why rather than just saying "You're wrong."
